Arts Council Presents Two Summer Exhibitions

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts supports all the arts, in all the Keys, all the time. The community is invited to visit the Gato Building to view the two summer exhibitions during business hours, Monday through Friday 9 to 5 except for holidays. Free admission. Free parking is available at the Gato Building located at 1100 Simonton Street, so please join us. There are two exhibitions to view: “Tropical Madness” on the first floor, and “On the Hook” featuring photographs by Mark Hedden on the second floor.

“Tropical Madness” is an exhibition of original artworks by members of the Miami-based Tropical Botanic Artists collective. The botanical subjects include 40-plus colorful, scientifically accurate works, executed in watercolor or colored pencil, some with added gouache or pen and ink.
The exhibit includes portraits of plants, both native and exotic, that grow in South Florida. Artists: Margie Bauer, Kristi Bettendorf, Beverly Borland, Silvia Bota, Marie Chaney, Susan Cumins, Jeanie Daniel Duck, Julio J. Figueroa, Pauline Goldsmith, Leo Hernandez, Elsa Nadal, Carol Onstad, Laurie Richardson, Donna Torres and Jedda Wong.

“On the Hook” features original photographs by Mark Hedden. People have been living on boats off Key West longer than there has been a town called Key West – or even Cayo Hueso. On the Hook is a photo narrative project focusing on this community — a mix of old timers, newcomers and sailors who are here to earn enough money to make it to the next deep-water port — the people who live on the edge of the edge. Supported by awards from John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Anne McKee Artists Fund and Florida Keys Council of the Arts, and donations from Holly Merrill, TEAM KAUFELT, Peyton Evans, Judith & Stanley Zabar, Craig Reynolds Landscape Architecture, Mary Ellen’s Bar, Green Parrot, Marquesa Hotel, Manley deBoer, Sue Sullivan, Meridyth & Gordon McIntosh, Gerald Fritz, and Betty Rubenstein.
